![]() ![]() ![]() When the band's in blast and tremolo whirlwind mode, the synths are nowhere to be found, which instantly makes this infinitely more tasteful than a good three quarters of modern USBM. The most important feature of the synths on 'Dark Descent Of Fallen Souls' is that they're used as an accent, not a full-fledged instrumental accompaniment where it wouldn't be appropriate. Summon was always more melodic than either of those bands, though, with delicately applied and never overbearing synthesizers adding texture during some of the slower passages of their music. While a great deal of this music is influenced by Swedish and Norwegian styles of black metal, you can also here a substantial influence from bands like Profanatica and Havohej in some of the more demented and depraved riffing. Despite how these guys were plugging away with consistently great and ensnaring music for fifteen years before their breakup, Summon is still a name too often unknown in the USBM scene. Summon is a US-based death-tinged black metal band that absolutely never got the recognition they deserved from the USBM scene, or, indeed, the metal scene as a whole. A lot of it often comes down to matters of degree simply better riffs, better vocals, better song construction. Like a lot of (good) oldschool-styled albums, it's hard to articulate what makes this great, or, more importantly, what sets it apart from similar artists. ![]()
